The View from Mudsock Heights: The End of a Photographic Era Brings Sadness and Memories

By Dennis E. Powell | Jan 11, 2011 at 7:10 AM

When the word came, it was like news that an old friend had died, albeit an old friend I hadn’t seen for years. A small camera shop in Kansas the last Thursday in 2010 turned off the last machine in the world capable of processing Kodachrome film. The best color film ever made is now gone, probably forever, a victim of the digital revolution.

Office 2011: A Suite Well Suited for Macs

By Timothy R. Butler | Jan 08, 2011 at 10:23 PM

So, you received a new Mac for Christmas – you are probably going to want some sort of office suite for writing letters or papers, creating presentations and so on. There are a number of respectable choices out there, including Apple’s very good iWork suite. Nevertheless, Microsoft’s Office has long held the status of the gold standard of suites and its components have a long history on the Mac. In this review we investigate whether it deserves a place on your computer.

The View from Mudsock Heights: Here's Something Wonderful to Do With that Christmas-Stocking Orange

By Dennis E. Powell | Jan 01, 2011 at 2:22 AM

There was an episode of Doctor Who a few years ago in which the Doctor found in the pocket of his bathrobe a tangerine. He called it a “satsuma,” which is the word for tangerine in England and outer space. He then launched into a short speech about how there was always one in the toe of the Christmas stocking.

The Christmas Question

By Timothy R. Butler | Dec 25, 2010 at 6:23 AM

Another Christmas is upon us. Christmas carols are playing on radio stations, the decorations are sparkling and the shopping season is winding down. The first Christmas, of course, wasn’t anything like this: there were not any of the decorations and the merchants certainly had not been anticipating the day. On the first Christmas, the people went about their business oblivious, not recognizing the Christ. Decorations aside, is that really any different today?

Parties, Muck, Swaying Camels and a Star

By Tamara Butler | Dec 24, 2010 at 7:15 PM

This December has been one of being still for me. As much as I wanted to go to all the parties, the concerts, the light shows and all of the other celebrations of the season, it just was not meant to be. This scourge of a cold bug that my family passed back and forth, and which seems to have left half the population around here coughing, hacking and sneezing through the season, has turned into a gift. Looking back on it, I have probably observed more “Christmas” this year than other years in recent memory.

Gifts of Christmas 2010: Procrastinator’s Edition

By Timothy R. Butler | Dec 24, 2010 at 12:06 AM

So, here we are two days before Christmas. For the most part, it is growing too late to get gifts shipped to you (or to whomever you are shopping for) before Christmas. Never fear – thoughtful gift ideas are still within reach. Thanks to the wonders of the Internet, there are many nice gifts you can give that show more thought than the ever-present gift card, yet, like the gift card, can be delivered electronically.

The View from Mudsock Heights: Forget the Better Mousetrap -- We’re Building Better Mice

By Dennis E. Powell | Dec 22, 2010 at 11:50 PM

It was a good year for mice. The headline in Medical Daily last week is typical: “Reproductive scientists create mice from 2 fathers.” It seems that through impressive scientific jiggery-pokery in the lab, researchers at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center were able to extract a cell from each of two male mice, combine their DNA, put the results into a surrogate mouse mother, and produce a mouseling that was not genetically related to the mother at all. (What has this to do with cancer research? Good question.)
